Tips for Finding and Using an Ink Refill Kit

Before you go out and buy another overpriced ink cartridge for your printer, consider using an ink refill kit instead. Ink refill kits are a terrific way to save money, and with a little bit of elbow grease (and maybe stained fingertips) you can have your printer back in action in no time. But don't just go out and buy the first one you find. Follow these simple tips to ensure you pick the right kit and to avoid damaging your printer.

All ink refill kits are not created equal, and neither are printers. Each manufacturer designs their printers according to different specifications, including the way ink is transferred onto paper. Compound that with the fact that there are numerous types of inks available. Before you go out and just purchase any old refill kit, be sure to note your printer's manufacturer and model number. You will need this when selecting your ink refill kit.

Some helpful hints:

• Don't let your cartridge run dry before using your ink refill kit. Your printer and the printer heads in particular could become seriously damaged if dry ink is passed through them. Once you see that your print job is beginning to get light, it would be a good idea to give your ink cartridges a recharge. And in case you aren't keeping an eye on your printed pages, don't worry. Most printers today will actually let you know the ink is running low by popping up an "Ink is Low" alert message on your computer screen.
• It is very important that you carefully follow the instructions included with your ink refill kit, even if you have refilled printer ink cartridges on other printers. As mentioned above, each printer and ink cartridge is different, and you need to be 100% sure that you are using the ink refill kit correctly.
• Before injecting the ink into the cartridge, be sure you are using the right color! This is especially important for color printers that use four different ink cartridges.
• Be very careful when filling the ink cartridge. You do not want to spill the ink onto your table or clothes. Use rubber gloves to protect your hands. Stop refilling once you see the ink reach the fill hole or dripping out of the print head.
